Comprehensive Teen
Orthodontic Treatment
Teen orthodontic treatment, also known as comprehensive orthodontic treatment, is the most common form of orthodontic care. Treatment during adolescence is often also considered to be the second phase of a two-phased treatment plan for more demanding cases. Treatment often includes, but is not limited to, the use of braces.
Teenagers should seek an exam at the first sign of an orthodontic problem. These problems include crowding, protruding teeth, cross bites, underbites, jaw pain or problems chewing. Correction of these problems before they worsen will help avoid future complications. The presence of poor growth patterns, as a result of the developing malocclusion (bad bite), could make the problem more difficult to treat when growth is finished. Consequently, “waiting” for all the permanent teeth to erupt before seeking an orthodontic exam is ill-advised.
The objective of comprehensive treatment, as with all orthodontic treatment, is to develop a properly functioning occlusion (bite). Your teeth should function together well, to maintain a healthy mouth and happy smile.
Following active orthodontic treatment, we will make upper and lower removable retainers. It is recommended that these retainers are worn full time for at least 18 months after treatment while the bone supporting the teeth stabilizes. Then, after full-time wear we recommend nighttime wear indefinitely.
